Rep. Donna Edwards (D. MD)I remember a time in our family when we needed Social Security disability benefits because of my father's disability. After 30 years serving in our nation's Air Force, Social Security was part of the promise he could come home to.
Those benefits were critical to our family and my younger siblings who were still at home with my Mom and Dad.
All families deserve Social Security's safeguard and the decency to make ends meet, put food on the table, and get the health care and medications they need. I will never let anyone -- Republican, Democrat, or even my opponent -- negotiate, compromise, or consider cuts to Social Security.
Our nation once came together to lift citizens out of poverty and guarantee that from one generation to the next, we'd take care of working families. Now, 80 years later, we face many of those same challenges -- too many seniors and Americans live on the edge, struggling to meet their basic needs.
It's within our power to expand on Social Security's promise. Instead of subsidizing CEO paychecks, tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, and giant tax breaks for oil companies -- we can increase benefits and provide the cost of living increase recipients deserve.
Let's reinvest in hard-working Americans and give them the support they need. Join me in telling Congress we must protect and expand Social Security.
