Wes Moore will be the next governor of Maryland, defeating Republican candidate Dan Cox and switching the state governor's office from Republican to Democratic hands. Moore is a former Army captain and combat veteran who previously headed the anti-poverty nonprofit Robin Hood Foundation.

Cox was a far-right candidate who helped organize buses to Washington, D.C., for the Jan. 6 Trump rally that would quickly become a violent attempt to topple the U.S. government, and who tweeted that Mike Pence was a "traitor" for certifying Biden's victory. Cox also would not commit to respecting the legitimacy of even his own election, and faced withering criticism from outgoing Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who called him "a QAnon whack job."
