We need to start pressuring our Republican governor to join with the governors of CA, NY and WA in the climate coalition.
Blue States Form Climate Alliance After Trump Withdraws From Paris Pact
Talking Points Memo reports that the governors of these three states have agreed to form a coalition:
The alliance will support the Paris pact and serve as “a forum to sustain and strengthen existing climate programs, promote the sharing of information and best practices, and implement new programs to reduce carbon emissions from all sectors of the economy,” according to a statement from the three governors.
The more states who join this, the better, not just for them but for the U.S. and for the world. Maryland is a very blue state, despite having a Republican governor, Larry Hogan.
We need to push hard on this issue because climate change is now an even worse threat than before with popular-vote-loser Trump pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement. We need to get as much of the U.S. as possible working on the goals of the Agreement.
And a less important, but still very important issue: Hogan is the Republican governor in a blue state and he’s up for re-election in 2018.
We should be pressuring him non-stop on this.
We need to force him to choose between his “moderate” image and Trump’s bizarre and extremist decision on climate change. If Hogan refuses to take a stand — which is how he’s played everything so far — we use this against him in 2018. Let’s expose his moderate image for the sham it is if (likely when) he refuses to take a stand against Trump. Again.
If he refuses to support what the vast majority of our state supports, action to fight the global threat of climate change, he proves that he is not the governor for Maryland. And he can’t sneak out of it the way he’s done with his other decisions — his “moderate” image has been protected for him by our Democratic state legislature who have overridden the bad choices he’s made. Marylanders are not aware of how really bad Hogan is because they have the buffer of a big Democratic majority in our state legislature.
We need to do this! Make him pay the price for his loyalty to Trump and the Republicans!
