There will be a rally and press conference Monday night, February 13th, 7:00 pm, Lowe House Office Building, Room 150, 6 Bladen Street, Annapolis Maryland, to support the proposed Trust Act. The press conference will announce the introduction of this bill in the House of Delegates. The bill is modeled after a California law that limits the extent that state officials, including state and local police, can cooperate with Federal authorities in rounding up and deporting undocumented immigrants.
The bill would reverse Republican Governor Hogan’s directive for jail authorities to notify federal authorities before an undocumented immigrant is released from jail. Under the Trust Act, police in Maryland will be forbidden to hold undocumented immigrants longer than required by the Maryland criminal justice system. The bill is being introduced by Delegates Victor Ramirez and Josephine Pena-Melnyk, both of Prince Georges County, who will speak at the press conference/rally. It is important to pressure all Democrats in the Maryland legislature to support this bill, so it can be passed with a veto proof majority, as Hogan is certain to veto the legislation.
Hope to see some of my fellow Marylanders at the House Office Building Monday night.
