Today is a rough day. Even rougher than 2004. But we are now entrusted with an awesome responsibility—defending the Constitution and our system from the inevitable overreaches of Donald Trump—as the loyal opposition. If we do, there is a bright light at the end of this admittedly very dark tunnel.
It is now our job, and the job of the the 248 Democratic Members of the House and Senate, to oppose radical portions of President Trump’s agenda. It is our job, and the job of the 248 Democratic Members of the House and Senate, to speak for the 20 million people that President Trump wants to take health insurance from.
It is now our job, and the job of the 248 Democratic Members of the House and Senate, to speak up when President Trump inevitably overreacts to his inability to implement parts of his radical agenda.
If we do, President Trump will either have to learn how to compromise or accept his fate as a one term President. If the latter happens, Republicans, who will now sport “100% Trump,” voting records, may lose their majorities. And President Obama’s legacy won’t be one of failed hope that ended in Trumpism but instead will be of the person who laid the foundation for a generation of enduring progressive governance. And we might well be reading an article like this five years from now:
November 2021—President Martin O’Malley said he expected 250 million Americans to be signed up for his new Medicare Part All program by the end of the week.
“This is a historic achievement that will again ensure that every American will be treated with dignity at the doctor’s office,” said President O’Malley at a Rose Garden Press Conference. “This builds on an the progress made by President Obama with the Affordable Care Act and Improves upon it,” said O’Malley.
“I’m thrilled by the remarkable progress made by President O’Malley and the Democratic Congress in just 10 months,” said former President Barack Obama in a statement delivered from his home in Honolulu.
“Our website is running smoothly and people have noted how low their premiums are. They’re also shocked that prescription drugs will be provided with no copay thanks to our negotiated prices. We expect 250 million sign ups by the end of the week” said Health and Human Services Secretary Ed Rendell.
Vice President Tammy Duckworth said, “The O’Malley-Duckworth administration wants to emphasize that this does not apply to Veterans. We have restored VA Care and are working to open the clinics closed by the Trump administration.”
“This is amazing. I can afford medicine I was going with out,” said Mary Smith, a breast cancer patient. “I might yet live another 10 years and live to see my grandson graduate from college. He’d be the first in our family to graduate from college. This is so much better than the nothing I received under Trumpcare”
Political analyst Robby Mook said, “This will avoid the issues with the Affordable Care Act and provide affordable coverage to the entire country.”
Former President Donald Trump, on business in Moscow, said, “This will be twice the disaster that Obamacare was. Believe me.”
Asked about President Trump’s statement Mook said, “President Trump is the gift that keeps giving to the Democratic Party. Republicans who voted to take insurance away from 20 million Americans will have to answer for those votes for the rest of their lives.”
Minority Leader Paul Ryan’s office declined to issue a statement when contacted by the Washington Post.
Open enrollment for Medicare Part All runs through November 30th.
