When I get frustrated and I refresh the polls so much the button stops working, and I’ve given money until I am wondering what is left in my kids piggy banks (just kidding), I realize I need to volunteer. I’ve been here before, with Obama twice, around October the news and the polls and the general tenor of the country makes me realize I can’t sit on the sidelines anymore.
I almost didn’t go tonight, I had to work late and was pretty tired but I was curious and I knew I’d just sit at home and read this site and watch the news and get frustrated. I was curious how would the scene go after the whole “deplorables” and the pneumonia stuff? So, lo and behold I still pulled in on my way home, and the parking lot at the office was full, inside it was busy. More full than the previous week and someone was at every table, some people on the floors, making calls. A bunch of people were building yard signs.
Tonight’s focus was on getting volunteers from Maryland to volunteer in Pennsylvania to canvas, I haven’t had a weekend free yet but am hoping to in October. It’s too important not to.
Anyway the atmosphere was really celebratory and people were laughing and it seemed like people were having a lot of success.
I hunkered down with my numbers, first off most people answered. No one was upset that I called. I had a lot of people who wanted to phone bank. Maybe 2-3 people said they would canvas this weekend and maybe 3-4 for next weekend. Everyone was a Hillary supporter and was fired up to beat Donald Trump. A lot of people I talked to already talked about donating money.
Anyway I know MD is a solid blue state, even with Trump visiting the area recently. And what is important is to use our enthusiasm and talents to help solidify the nearby battlegrounds. So, if you’ve been debating about volunteering, even in a deep blue state, do it. Every contact counts.
